Paintings rendered on the wall are known as wall paintings. This is considered to be one of the types of classical art. Wall paintings are found worldwide because of the religious importance portrayed in different forms in different countries.
The existence of the wall paintings is gradually perishing and
a few like medieval period wall paintings are lost forever as most
of them were uncovered.
Few of the paintings are still there due
to layers of plaster of paris which has increased its life. There
is customary tradition in Egypt where the walls of their homes, palaces,
and tombs were articulately made with superior quality. |

Often the images of Gods were used for making these paintings, rulers
who were famous during their periods and general affairs were the
themes for wall paintings. These paintings were useful in the research study undertaken by the
archaeologists on the subject, about the existence of life
in the ancient times in Egypt. The remarkable feature about
India is that wall paintings had their own value before the
existence of any organized civilization.
These paintings convey meaningful message
to the common public in a non verbal mode.
Wall paintings were considered special because this
was the way by which one was taught on the related subjects,
before establishing educational institutions and availability
of skilled teachers.
In ancient traditions paintings were made on simple
themes representing sun, moon, trees, and men hunting,
traveling, and so on. Bhimbetka Wall paintings, Ajanta
and Ellora wall paintings are the wonders' wall paintings
in India.

Gradually the themes, on which wall paintings were made,
got transformed into subjects like religious beliefs, faiths
and fears. Again the themes of the wall paintings changed
into ritualistic practices of religious and social life.
Pollution, earthquake, volcano eruption, and climatic conditions
had its negative effects on the wall paintings due to which these
paintings disappeared. One should understand that preserving wall
paintings is of prime importance but it cannot be saved from destruction,
it can be protected only to a certain extent. |
