The word Still Life means objects without any kind
of movement or reaction. Tableware, books, fruits and flowers,
musical instruments, and newspapers are the common themes.
In the 17th century the importance was given to Still-life paintings
which had a wide publicity in the European continent, remarkably
in Netherlands. Still-life paintings were kept for public viewing
by the Dutch painters in America.
The American painters had the inspiration
of creating these paintings without learning the procedure of making
these paintings. Peale family of Philadelphia was the first people
in achieving Still-life paintings.

One of the notable paintings of Peale was pristine tabletop
groupings of glassware and fruit with Chinese export basket.
Peale considered Still life as scientific subject. Martin Johnson Heade, artist in Still life paintings did his works
based on spirits. Natural themes of Heade's on which his works
like flowers and birds portrayed with poetic atmosphere, were
one of the scintillating ones of American art.
Notable painters of the 19th century
like William Harnett, John Fredrick Peto, and worked
on the subjects like close observation.
The work involved on shadows and reflections, color
and textures in their paintings, based on their total
imagination is so elegant that it deceives the viewer.
Different method was adopted by other artists. They
mainly dealt on the techniques and qualities of a creating
the painting.
Modern approaches played a major role in the creation
of Still life paintings in the beginning of the twentieth
century.

during the mid and late of twentieth century.

There was shift from soup and beer cans to cakes. The still life
