Caravaggio paintings are the paintings from the collection of well-known artist Michelangelo merisi da Caravaggio.

One of the interesting facts to note about Caravaggio's paintings is that his personality which was quite mysterious, mesmerizing, radical and sometimes treacherous in nature, had a great effect on his paintings too. After his death, Caravaggio paintings were often credited for starting the trend of modern art.

Interestingly, only about 50 Caravaggio paintings   in their original shape can be seen by the people; rest of the work has either been redrawn or has got destroyed in passage of time.

Caravaggio finished his paintings without drawing and that drew him instant praise. Caravaggio paintings had a lot of dark reality in them; a lot of violence and vulgarity in them; this is the reason why some of the paintings got rejected first hand.

Some of the well-known Caravaggio paintings are Entombment; Madonna of the Pilgrims, Grooms' Madonna, the Death of the Virgin, the Supper at Emmaus, the Calling of St Matthew, the Resurrection of Lazarus, Boy with a Basket of Fruit, the Fortune Teller, the Musicians, Rest on the Flight into Egypt, Basket of Fruit, the Calling of Saint Matthew, the Crucifixion of Saint Peter, the Crowning with Thorns and the Martyrdom of Saint Ursula.

Boy Peeling a Fruit was one of the first Caravaggio paintings. The use of shadows in different shades was made a classic practice by Caravaggio paintings.

For making his paintings, Michelangelo merisi da Caravaggio always used either prostitutes or people from the lower strata of society as his models. Caravaggio paintings proved to be a critical parameter for each and every amateur painter.

One similarity that can be noticed in all Caravaggio paintings is the presence of dark background. Though his work was bitterly criticized but Caravaggio paintings began to be desired by many people inside and outside Rome.
